Surviving the Heat

Hi Kids,

How's your summer in K-town? Have you been able to settle into the new house yet? Have you made any friends and do you know what school you're going to? Hopefully you won't have to bus it but I guess you're already used that from living in Strabane.

The picture above is from our porch at 5am. It's been really hot and humid in Cape Breton this summer and we've already had more hot days in July than we've had all summer last year even though last summer was a great summer for weather as well. We're finding new places to swim and camp if we ever find the time to actually go camping. We spent one night on the north side of Cheticamp (which is about an hour from where we live) in the RV on a pebble beach with the ocean to the front and a fresh water river behind us, it was incredible and you kids would have loved it! Unfortunately we didn't get any pics this time but I'll make sure to get some next time we're there.

I've managed to get quite a bit of riding this summer although not near as much as I would like but then again I could ride every day for hours and still feel like it's not enough. Zachary you would absolutely love the roads and trails here and since the kids around here ride so young you'd have many friends to ride with including your biggest fan, your Dad! Sophie, I wonder if you'll ever be interested in motorcycles... something tells me you just might, after all it's in our Lanctot blood. Did you know that one your ancestors was a monk who loved to ride motorcycles?  This is a picture of one of our guests Harley's, he had the skull attached to the front end... Zach I thought you'd like that. We've had a lot of last minute guests from all over the country and it's been such a rewarding experience. We meet all these different people from all different walks of life, all having a passion for the same thing. You would never know by looking at them that they're FBI forensic specialists, state troopers, lawyers, musicians, artists, teachers and on occasion we get some celebrity's like in the winter of 2008 we had a rock band stay with us and just last week a former professional Canadian hockey player and his friend spent a few nights with us. The best part is, so far all of them have been extremely nice and have made us feel like we are on the right path or at the very least that they have truly enjoyed their experience here at our little retreat. Do you still have the shirts we sent you?

I know it's all very confusing and hard for you right now but like I have said before and will say over and over again... I never left you nor did I give you up!!! Your mom and Simon were never going to let me visit with you kids or bring you to Nova Scotia for the summers not even a weekend!!!! I know Simon convinced your mom to do the things that would emotionally and psychologically hurt you for his own benefit... a free ride! Simon can be extremely convincing, he's the "cool guy" the life of the party and everyone thinks he's funny. He'll play house dad for as long as he can just so he won't have to work full time and he will always think of an excuse not to stand on his own two feet and get a real full time job. He'll have your mom support him until she eventually sickens of it but by then it will be too late... it already is.  I know now you might think he's the best Dad ever (Sophie I know you feel different than Zach does about me) but that will wear off and you too will see him for what he is, a shyster. Regardless of what has happened between your mom and I she knows in her heart that all I ever wanted was the best for you kids and her and that I made my decisions based on the happiness of you kids, she won't admit to it now but I did the best I knew how for your happiness.  If she had kept your house in Burlington she would have been so much further ahead but instead she listened to Simon and bought that money pit in Flamborough, even Lou our real estate agent said it was a bad move.  I'm sure she lost money on that purchase where she could have made money on the Burlington house, enough for a very nice nest egg for you kids if properly invested. Any way that's her problem now and sadly you kids are the ones paying for it.. again!!! All I can do now is make sure he treats you kids like gold and hopefully your mom will make sure he does too.

We miss you kids very much and I wish with all of my heart that you were here.
I love you very much and I hope you're having a great summer!

Stay cool in the sun,
xoxoxo Dad
